He Whānau Mārama Trust was established in 2016 by whānau members from Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Pukemiro who wanted to support students, and their families, in developing their skills and talents in areas that weren't included in the school curriculum. As relationships with stakeholders and the wider community developed, and projects grew, the Trust expanded its objectives to serve all of the community.

The current trustees are:

One of the Trust's main projects is our youth-driven kaupapa called Shine On Kaitaia. "Youth Navigators" learn various lifelong skills while organising or volunteering at events. Giving back to their community boosts their self-esteem and confidence. It also teaches them accountability and the importance of being responsible for the environment in which they live, learn and play. They learn to appreciate their surroundings and the endless opportunities to create positive spaces for community engagement, using the local parks, beaches, streets, schools, marae, abandoned areas and community halls that they would otherwise take for granted.

By focusing on positive community interaction and promoting social cohesion, we believe this impacts on the overall well being of the community, where whānau feel supported and cared about. This provides tamariki with the ability to build resilience against negative influences and stay in the light or "maramatanga" - knowledge, realising their potential, understanding and achieving, enabling them and their light to shine.

We would like to credit and thank Dave Snowden for creating the Trust's logo design.

"Kia hora te marino, kia whakapapa pounamu te moana, kia tere te kārohirohi i mua i tō huarahi. May peace be widespread, may the sea glisten like greenstone, and may the shimmer of light guide you on your way."

Vision and Mission

Mārama means "light" or "enlightenment" and also encompasses the "Moon" which gives us light in times of darkness. He Whānau Mārama therefore is providing whānau with opportunities and resources to empower ourselves, our tamariki, mokopuna and the community. He Whānau Mārama Trust encapsulates "Ki te whei ao ki te ao mārama... Tihei Mauri Ora!" We want to nurture, embrace and support tamariki to reach their full potential and uphold their mana and "Tino Rangatiratanga" to become successful leaders for themselves, their whānau and their wider community.
